The XD-Picture card is a memory card format
that is predominantly used in Fuji and
Olympus cameras. XD used to stand for
Extreme Digital but this term is not used as
much these days.
XD-Picture cards were introduced to the
market in 2002 and were developed jointly by
Fuji and Olympus. They measure 25mm x 20mm x
1.7mm and are one of the smaller memory
cards used in digital cameras. Current
capacities are 256mb, 512mb, 1GB and 2GB.
The 4GB cards are expected to be released
into the market shortly.
XD-Picture cards are also available in two
speed formats. These are Type M and Type H.
The Type M cards are a similar speed to the
old standard xd card. The Type H cards are
high speed cards and will process the data
on your camera at a higher speed. We have
heard recently that Olympus have plans to
only produce the Type M cards so you may see
less and less of the Type H cards on the
market.
Olympus have also installed software on
their cards which allows you to use special
functions on the Olympus cameras such as 3D
and Panorama mode. This software is
installed on all Olympus XD-Picture cards.
