SD or Secure Digital memory cards are a digital media format that are universally compatible with many of the latest digital devices including digital cameras, digital camcorders, mobile phones, MP3 players and PDA's.

The standard Secure Digital card measures 24mm x 32mm x 2.1mm. SD cards are by far the most universally used memory card format in todays marketplace. The standard SD card now has capacities ranging from 128mb up to 2GB.

The SD card allows users to store any type of Digital media such as photo, music and video and move it between cameras, PC's and any other supported device. SD cards are now available in different speed formats, these are measured in MB/s. There are two different speeds measured on SD cards - the read speed and the write speed. The read speed is the speed at which the Secure Digital memory card can be read by either the camera or PC and the write speed is the speed at which data is written onto the card. This is usually noticable in how much time the user has to wait between shots.SD Card

Most devices can use SD cards up to 2GB in capacity. But alot of new cameras can now use a new format of SD card. This is called the SDHC card (SD High Capacity)SDHC cards are only compatible with devices which show the SDHC logo. This new format starts at 4GB and is currently available up to 8GB. In the future SDHC memory cards will be available in 32GB, this will allow the user to store huge amounts of high quality video and images. SDHC card speed are also measured in a new speed format. These are Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6. The 2,4 and 6 stand for 2MB/s, 4MB/s and 6MB/s read/write speed.

Mini-SD Memory Cards
 

Mini-SD cards were released a couple of years ago and were designed mainly for mobile phones and PDA's rather than Digital Cameras. Mini-SD cards have been very popular over the past couple of years with mobile phone manufacturers like Nokia and Samsung. They allow the phone user to store many digital images, music files or video clips.

The Mini-SD card measures: 21.5mm x 20mm x 1.4mm making it the medium sized card out of the 3 different SD formats, these being SD, Mini-SD and Micro-SD.

Nearly all Mini-SD memory cards come bundled with a full sized SD adaptor which allows the Mini-SD card to be used in any device that uses full sized SD cards such as digital cameras and satelite navagation sytems.

Mini-SD cards are also available in different speeds. We currently sell a high speed version made by Sandisk called the UltraII. This card will transfer data at a higher speed than a standard card. All high speed memory cards whether it be SD or Mini-SD are fully compatible with any device that uses standard speed cards.

Mini-SD cards are available in the following capacities: 256mb, 512mb, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB.
It should be noted that 4GB Mini-SD cards (also known as Mini-SDHC) are only compatible with the very latest handsets and users should check compatibility before purchasing.
