Micro-SD and Micro-SDHC Memory Cards


The Micro-SD card memory card  is the smallest of the SD memory card family and has been designed for use primarily in mobile devices such as mobile phones and PDA's.

The Micro-SD measures a tiny 15mm x 11mm x 0.7mm and is about the size of the average fingernail. Most mobile phones can use Micro SD cards up to 2GB but Sandisk has recently introduced the Micro-SDHC memory card. This stands for Micro-SD High Capacity and is available in capacities of 4GB and upwards up to 32GB. The
Micro-SD card is also known as the Transflash memory card although this term is rarely used nowadays.

Micro SD cards are becoming ever more popular today with the introduction of mobile phones that can store high quality music and video along with high MegaPixel cameras. Micro SD is used by all of the large mobile phone manufacturers including Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and HTC.

Many Micro-SD memory cards come supplied with a standard SD (Secure Digital) adaptor which allows the user not just to use the Micro-SD card in their mobile phone but also in their SD compatible digital cameras and camcorders.

In late 2010 another memory card format is due to be released that will have the same dimensions as a Micro-SD card. This new format will be called Micro-SDXC and will start at 64GB with possibilites in the future for capacities up to 2TB. This will be the future of mobile storage and will allow the user to store unbelievable amount of data.
