Micro M2 Memory Sets New Standard

The Micro M2 memory cards meet a new standard in today’s fastpaced add-on memory market.  As with many of the latest memory standards, the original concept and specifications have been developed by major consumer device manufacturers as adjuncts to their mobile phone, personal computer, and digital camera products.  Consistent with many standards today, these memory standards have been developed by the multi-national firms which, in turn, license the production to outside suppliers and competing specialized memory makers.

The Micro M2 Memory card is available from its original standard designers, Sony and SanDisk as well as other major memory purveyors.  While the Micro M2 chips have a theoretical maximum memory capacity of 32GB, no manufacturer, however, has yet perfected mass market versions of this high capacity chip.  Currently, chips as small as 128KB and as large as 8GB are available in the marketplace.

Important Standards

These Micro M2 products have an underlying specification which includes design criteria of voltages from 1.8 volts to 3.3 volts; and card dimensions (L x W x H)  of 0.59" x 0.49" x 0.05".  These new product standards provide for fast read and write speeds to the chip from the controlling device.  Typically, these memory cards are designed for reads of 10MB per second and writes of 3MB per second.  These cycles include both a record pass and a verification of transmit pass to verify data transfer accuracy.

In addition to performance criteria, the Micro M2 cards are compatible with most M2 slotted phones, and with Memory Pro Micro slotted devices, when an appropriate M2 card adapter is used.  In configurations that include an adapter card, the maximum data transfer rate is normally as fast as 160 Mbps.  The specification calls for this M2 memory card to be approximately one-quarter of the size of older Micro Stick Pro Duo chip configurations.

Like other recently designed memory cards, the Micro M2 is designed as an externally removable media with a controlled eject function to prevent users from losing the media.  Once data is stored, the Micro M2 can be inserted in an adapter for data transfer to another device.  Since other devices may have different edge connections from the Micro M2 or different transfer protocols (e.g. parallel vs. serial), the Micro M2 is designed to fit into a number of available adaptors.  This occurs so long as the file structure itself can be transferred, updated, and returned to its original device using such consumer devices as personal computers.  Data can also be added from outside one-way devices such as digital cameras perhaps to move pictures to a smart mobile phone.
