M2 Memory

The Memory Marketplace Calls for M2 Memory

As mobile phones have become smart phones, and digital cameras have become Mega-pixel cameras, users have demanded more memory storage in a smaller physical space. This need for physically small memory chips has led to the creation of M2 or Memory Stick Micro memory.

M2 Memory was developed by a partnership of Sony and SanDisk which has flourished in the marketplace.  Traditional smart phones such as the Blackberry series of mobile phones require 512MB of memory and more.  The latest entries, such as the iPhone and its clones, often come equipped with 4-8GB of memory.  This memory must be extremely compact, yet the manufacturers must be able to make the memory in mass volume units without requiring users to pay exorbitant prices.  This need for small dense high capacity memory is now largely met by M2 or Memory Stick Micro memory.

Back in 2005, when SanDisk and Sony announced the development of the M2 memory chip, the Chip was designed to meet these basic specifications:

o        Compatible with all M2 slotted mobile phones worldwide

o        Compatible with Memory Pro Duo slotted devices when used with an included M2 adaptor

o        Maximum data transfer rates up to 160 Mbps

o        Read/Write speeds of 10 MB/second read, and 3MB/second write

o        Card Dimensions: 0.59" length x 0.49" width x 0.05" high (A tiny card approximately one-quarter the size of a Memory Stick Pro Duo Media.)

o        Acceptable Voltage in the range of 1.8 volts to 3.3 volts.

o        Memory capacity was designed to include 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB.  Although not yet available in the marketplace, the maximum theoretical limit is 32GB.

Wide Use of M2 Memory

According to Dr. Eli Harari, President and CEO of SanDisk, their M2 Memory product is popular “with a wide range of consumer products such as digital cameras, video-games, and mobile phones”.  “Sony and SanDisk recognize the rapidly growing market opportunity for memory cards with multimedia mobile phones, and are joining forces to develop the ultra‑small Memory Stick Micro (M2 Memory) format to foster development of extremely compact multimedia mobile phones”.

The M2 Memory media has slotted edges lengthwise to allow a greater slim-line design of connectors.  This reduces space needs in host devices and the M2 Memory provides a great capacity for its size.  It is the availability of extremely small high capacity memory that has literally made possible super smart phones like the iPhone and Blackberry World Edition.

In recent years, the M2 Memory format has replaced such popular formats as the Memory Stick Duo PRO in shipped volume.  Memory has traditionally been used in a stick form to store digital still pictures and various software formatted data between computers.  Recently, they have been widely used to store and playback music and other entertainment content.  As phones have advanced and video storage media was needed in an extremely small format, M2 memory has been popular as the user’s choice.
