Popular memory card Types:

Micro-SD Memory Cards
Micro-SD cards are used in the majority of mobile phones except Sony Ericsson. 4GB and above are known as Micro-SDHC memory cards. Micro SD cards are a very popular mobile phone memory card and nearly all phones use them.

Memory Stick Micro M2
Micro M2 memory cards are used in Sony Ericsson mobile phones that were released pre 2010. Many new Sony Ericsson phones now use the Micro SD memory card format.

SD Memory Cards
SD (Secure Digital) memory cards are used in a variety of devices such as digital cameras, digital camcorders and Sat Nav systems. SD cards are available up to 2GB. The SD card format is still popular but most devices now also support SDHC cards which start at 4GB and above. Although they look identical in terms of size if your device of not SDHC compatible then the largest memory card you should use is a 2GB standard SD card.

SDHC memory cards
SDHC cards are used in similar devices to SD memory cards but start at 4GB and are currently available up to 32GB. Nearly all digital cameras and camcorders made after 2008 will use the SDHC format. There are currently 4 speeds of SDHC card. These are Class 2, 4, 6 and 10. These represent the minimum sustained write speed of the card in mb/s.

Compact Flash
Compact Flash memory cards are used primarily in bridge and SLR digital cameras. These are also known as cf cards with the most popular being produced by Sandisk and Lexar.

Memory Stick Pro Duo
Pro Duo memory cards are used solely in Sony devices such as digital cameras, digital camcorders and the Sony PSP. Most Sony devices released 2010 onwards now also use the SDHC memory card format as well as the memory stick Pro Duo.

XD-Picture Cards
XD Picture cards are used in Olympus and Fuji digital cameras and camcorders. Fuji no longer make XD cards but Olympus XD memory cards are compatible with both Fuji and Olympus digital cameras.

SDXC Memory Cards
SDXC is the brand new format of memory card and is currently only compatible with a few of the latest digital cameras and camcorders. This format starts at 64GB and in the future will be produced up to 2TB.
